Speaking of Headlines: The recent World Water Forum declared that water could only be categorized as a human need and not a human right. Apparently better minds than ours have thus determined the new standard.
If we presume that the UN is the highest authority on the planet as far as granting rights then a radical rethink is in order. Our expectations have simply been too high.
The government of Canada is doing what 'it' thinks is in the interest of the greater good for all Canadians and, so far, Canadians in general have acquiesced.
Maybe we failed to articulated the problem, or maybe we interpreted the problem wrongly. Instead of striving for sustainability of the environment for all Canadians we must swallow a lesser standard of 'getting the optimal survivable environment for most Canadians.'
This decision seems to have been made and until now, nobody has been saying it is so.
I know from experience that the language we use to describe an issue reflects the sign of the times. We used to talk about Canada having the highest level of healthcare in the world. That changed predictably to the most appropriate health care given the resources available, however inadequate the resources.
I just didn't think that change would happen so fast.
I'm not saying the situation is hopeless, but unless anarchy is threatened, or some broad based public disregard for the authority which represents us emerges, our future has been paved with the new governmental intention... getting the optimal survivable environment for most Canadians. Why? because a clean environment has been determined to be a human 'need'. It is not, however, a human 'right'.
