Development at all costs will cost us dearly

The economic mission to create jobs, get approvals, lower costs, open trade and labour
mobility, and generate economic growth and opportunities in every region is trumping environmental protection.

Environmental assessment is widely viewed as ineffective in preserving the environment. Some argue they create uncertainties and the loss of jobs. One approach - creation of a unified federal-provincial review process may reduce redundancy and unnecessary costs by removing multiple governmental reviews, replicated work, added cost, increased uncertainty, delayed decisions, reduced investment and lost jobs.

On the other hand First Nations' rights to consultation and accommodation also need to be respected. How does this fit into the "One Project, One Process" approach? Impediments to development are not limited to zoning, licensing and permitting requirements.

Ultimately, the main road block might be conceptual wrong headheadedness borne of disrespect and ingratitude for the environment and our misguided intention to continue living as if everything is all right, complacent in our complete denial of reality.
