A little known agreement on drought and desertification - and Canada's sense of world community
Cabinet has decided to withdraw from the United Nations Convention to Combat Drought and Desertification (UNCCD). It was signed in 1994. The only other treaty from which Canada has ever withdrawn, since 1867, was Kyoto.
Canada is the only country in the world exiting the UN Convention Against Drought. How much were we spending? … $290,000/year. (Toronto Pandas come in at $1 million/year.)
The pain and suffering of the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa -hundreds of millions of the world’s poorest and most desperate continues. Canada will now be the only nation on earth not part of the convention. All our multilateral commitments are under review but the Harper government will be giving a 10 million dollar contribution to the Climate and Clean Air Coalition- taken from the 1.2 B that was allotted to the Copenhagen accord.
Commentary:
"We didn't just break the deal, we broke the spell." The unseen bond that connects us all and prevents us from being subjugated by corporate tyranny. The spell of world community.
